The city that never sleeps has so many faces.
Tired ones, just waiting
Apathetic faces
Those of determination
Faces that smile at a Sunday afternoon’ s leisure
Faces of friendship
And of transit
And rest

In this city there are so many colors
So many textures
So many ages
Millions of people
All in an ant farm
Crawling about separately together

is the preferred mode of transportation. If you are lucky enough to meet a local you can get a ride into the Island’s interior. Thanks to the efforts of the Catalina Island Conservancy, there is very limited access to the island’s chapparal ecosystem, remote beaches, and it’s historical airport. Some surprise findings in the interior include ancient cave paintings by the natives, wild buffalo, and several endemic plant and animal species (found exclusively here on Catalina Island).
Catalina Island is twenty-six miles off of the mainland, and Avalon can be seen to face Long beach on a map. It’s only a one hour ferry ride from the busy city of LA, and it’s a magic place to visit for a dose of absolute relaxation.
I enjoyed each day I woke up in Avalon. I had the chance to meet the infamous Dr. Bill Bushing, the island’s foremost marine biologist and SCUBA diving journalist! He has been living on the island for about 40 years! We discussed about his experiences with underwater videography.
He recounted the story of the elusive diamond engagement ring thrown overboard by Lisa Marie Presely in the midst of her fight with fiance, Nicholas Cage. The ring is thought to remain in the vicinity of Avalon’s green pleasure pier somewhere beneath the daily dinghy and boat traffic. Needless to say, many divers have been in hot pursuit of the ring which is valued at about $300,000.0!
Dr. Bill also explained the island’s role as a training ground for the military during the Second World War. Recently some antique artillery was recovered in the Avalon Dive Park, and warranted it’s temporary closure as a safety precaution.
